New impulses for machining in practice

CHIRON looks back on a long and impressive history in innovation spanning from 1921 to 2021, characterized in particular by the developments in mechanical engineering since the 1970s. The CHIRON Group wrote the next chapter of this success story with the innovation program introduced in 2018, which it pursued steadfastly and which saw the product portfolio further optimized in the company's centenary year.

New 715 Series for multifunctional complete machining
One of the highlights of the 2021 product campaign is the new CHIRON 715 Series. The MT 715 two+ was met with great interest during its online premiere at the OPEN HOUSE ONLINE and before a large audience in the interactive showroom at the 2021 EMO Milano. And it's easy to see why: With 5-axis complete machining or milling/turning machining on six sides, the four variants of the MT 715 have several advantages over production spread across multiple machines: Higher precision, shorter throughput times, more flexibility for changing functions, minimized setup times for small batch sizes, reduced logistics costs. The integrated workpiece automation makes an even higher degree of utilization possible by means of unmanned production in three-shift operation or at weekends.

The MT 715 variant incorporates four types of machine:
MT 715 one   with swivel head and rotary spindle
MT 715 one+ with swivel head, rotary spindle and counter spindle
MT 715 two with swivel head, rotary spindle and extra machining unit
MT 715 two+ with swivel head, rotary spindle and counter spindle plus extra machining unit

The second machining unit on models two and two+ can be used for guide bushes, rests, rotating centers, vices or other turning tools, for example. The bar loader takes care of feeding in the material, while the integrated workpiece automation handles the discharge of finished parts, or if machining chuck parts, the feed and discharge of the workpieces.

The MP 715 machine variant, where MP stands for Multi Profile, is designed for machining bar materials with any profile. All milling operations, such as machining hollow aluminum profiles for electric vehicles, run very efficiently in one setup. There will be more on the MP 715 in the next issue of speedfactor.

DZ 08 W precision+

DZ for highly productive double-spindle machining, W for parallel workpiece changing during operation, precision+ for the narrowest tolerances and best surface quality. The perfect combination in the new DZ 08 W precision+. The machining center firstly plays to its strengths where parts are manufactured in large quantities with a high milling ratio. For instance, in the automotive sector in the form of compressor wheels for turbochargers, components for scroll compressors as refrigerant compressors for climate control functions or for temperature management in the EV field of application. Secondly, the DZ 08 W precision+ is the ideal machine for manufacturing processes that require high dynamics in the axes. The new W variant has the added advantage of being able to completely machine a workpiece in two clamping positions on one machine or alternatively to run step-by-step production – e.g. housing with lid. Blanks are replaced by finished parts on the loading/discharging side, in parallel with the machining process on the other side of the bench. This means, compared with direct loading of the DZ 08 S precision+, productivity is once again dramatically increased.

DZ 28 S five axis and DZ 28 P five axis

Two double-spindles for large complex components offering the perfect combination of productivity, precision and dynamics. With a large spindle distance of 1,200 mm, the CHIRON Series 28 is the perfect candidate for the challenging machining demands of the automotive and aerospace industries. Other benefits to day-to-day production include the compact, flexible machine layout, spindles which can be moved independently on the Z and X axes, simple automation, optimum access to the working area and a clear view of the process thanks to operating and loading on separate sides. There's also the layout of the machining center as DZ 28 S five axis for direct loading or as DZ 28 P five axis with pallet changer for high quantities and short cycle times.

FZ 08 S mill turn precision+ with 65 mm diameter

Even larger milled/turned parts, a wider spectrum of parts from medical and precision engineering can be completely machined on one machine.
The new FZ 08 S mill turn precision+ stands out from the crowd with its maximum bar diameter of 65 mm, surpassing the previous 42 mm. What's staying the same? The combination of speed, ultra precision and high-quality surface finish. The multiple machining options in a single process with swivel head, turning spindle and counter spindle. Loading and unloading of the tool magazine during machine operation. Individual material feed via bar loader, bar loading magazine or robot for chuck parts. In short: Everything that makes the FZ 08 S mill turn precision+ the ideal tool for precision manufacturing.

FZ 16 S five axis with HSK-A100

Drill diameter 80 mm, milling capacity 1,000 cm³/min in E355 steel: Examples of the high efficiency of the FZ 16 S five axis. With HSK-A100 interface and powerful main spindle offering torque in excess of 400 Nm, it creates the ideal conditions for challenging machining tasks, such as structural components for aerospace or motor housings for electric vehicles.

Spindle position adjustment for double-spindles

Even better workpiece quality, wider spectrum of application. easier machine handling even for beginners: The fine adjustment of spindles on double-spindled CHIRON machining centers – including the 16 Series as of this year – brings even more practical benefits to manufacturing. By independently adjusting both main spindles on the X and Z axes, potential tool length errors or a misaligned clamp recess in the clamping device can be automatically compensated by the NC program during the process, irrespective of machining rate, allowing even more parts to be machined highly efficiently. The 16 Series, for example, has an adjustment range of +/- 0.5 mm on the Y axis and +/- 0.5 mm on the Z axis, alternatively a double-spindle machine can be adjusted using Z-axis compensation only.

DZ 16 W with VariocellUno
Efficiently replace pallets of blanks and finished parts during machine operation and produce many workpieces with very short cycle times: Requirements for series production are more than fulfilled by the combination of CHIRON DZ 16 W and the VariocellUno automation unit. The workpieces are handled by a 6-axis robot, the feed and discharge is executed by palletizer, drawer storage, conveyor belt or stacking cart depending on requirements.

Feed5 handling system

Feed5 is a six-axis handling robot which can automatically load and unload the Micro5. The new module acts as a fully automatic guide for workpieces and tools. Just as compact as the FACTORY5 brand machining center, the Feed5 is particularly useful for enabling increased autonomy and productivity for bigger series. The handling system equips the machine with workpieces up to 50 x 50 x 50 mm, and the tool change takes less than five seconds.

RemoteLine and EfficiencyServices free of charge as standard*

Remote diagnostics and remote maintenance with RemoteLine, EfficiencyServices for optimized responsive servicing: Both the SmartLine module and the digital service from CHIRON Group Service will already be included in all new CHIRON and STAMA branded machines from January 1st, 2022, and available to use free of charge for the entire duration of the warranty period. Once the warranty period has expired, the subscription can be continued straight away at the regular price for reduced downtimes, increased machine availability and customized support throughout the machine's lifecycle.

SmartLine modules DataLine AM and VisioLine AM

Two digital systems designed specifically for systematic process monitoring of laser deposition welding. Whether 3D metal printer with AM Cube or AM Coating: Firstly, DataLine AM means that all relevant process data can be displayed, recorded and documented continuously in real time. This allows product and process quality to be assessed with certainty. Secondly, VisioLine AM visualizes and saves video files recorded by multiple camera systems (e.g. the weld pool camera, thermal camera, workpiece camera, working area camera).
